Saint Therese
Fusing modern elements with the existing brick church structure in Seattle, this design creates a meaningful spatial narrative based on Catholic liturgical events.

The Catholic liturgy includes rituals based on historic events and sacred objects. We have carefully integrated these objects to bring out their transcendent qualities and placed them in a linear progression so that parishioners experience their power and story upon entering and leaving the church. The 16′ square cross, for example, must be passed under in order to enter the building, allowing one to experience the weight of Christ’s last steps. The baptismal font straddles the threshold between the vestibule and the sanctuary, reminding one of the water through which one enters the faith and departs this life. And the altar, set in the center of the sanctuary, allows all to share in the gifts of the table and its promise of eternal life.
